Of course, sometimes you may need more work to make a shadow look perfect, especially if it s being cast onto a curved or irregular surface. But for most of your shadow needs, the Perspective tool combined with Blur and layer transparency will give you everything you need.

Rather than using the Grammar Editor, you may prefer to write your own GRXML files. You can create a GRXML file in a text editor like Notepad or the Visual Studio 2005 XML editor by entering the GRXML tags and saving the file with a .grxml extension.

Don t include private functions in the output. Exclude output for a function < function >. Use this when there are functions that won t be changed. For example, some sites have source code that s been approved by a regulatory agency, and no matter how inefficient, the code will remain unchanged. Also exclude the time spent in the function from the percentage tables. The opposite of -e: only track time in < function >. Only use the time in < function > when calculating percentages. Don t print the explanatory text. If you re more experienced, you can appreciate this option. Accumulate samples. By running the program several times, it s possible to get a better picture of where time is spent. For example, a slow routine may not be called for all input values, and therefore you maybe mislead reading where to find performance problems.

There s a little fib in the last section. Remember where it said to match the shadow angle of other objects in the photo That s close to true but sometimes not close enough. The problem is perspective (the name of the tool you used to warp Tux s shadow to the right shape and angle!). If you look carefully, you can see the problem. In Figure 9-25, both the hiker s and Tux s shadows are at roughly the same angle. If you have a sharp eye, Tux s shadow will look just a bit out of line tilted down. However, in the final Figure 9-26, his shadow is rotated up a bit and somehow that looks more natural. Why is that It s actually a nearly ideal representation of the effect of perspective. But it s easier to start any discussion of perspective with the most elementary version.

Most leaks are memory leaks, where a program allocates memory from the heap (or free store) and then never properly releases that memory. Thus the memory can t be reallocated until the process stops running and the operating system then frees all resources. Memory leaks are dangerous because they re latent problems that don t affect a system until it has been running for some time. When a system needs to be running for days or weeks, even a small memory leak can consume all the memory allocated to a process. The concept of leaking can be applied to any limited resource that a program reserves for use and never relinquishes. A program can just as easily leak file handles as memory. The nature of programming usually results in memory being leaked, so tools focus on that problem. All memory-leak tools tell you where the allocation occurred that wasn t released; they don t show you what you d like to find, which is where the memory wasn t released.2

You probably remember your introduction to perspective in 4, when you drew the box for the tree planter. That was a reasonable introduction to single-point perspective (Figure 9-27).

This makes perfect sense. How can the computer show where something should have been released Nonetheless, some users expect to run a leak-detection tool and have it figure where the memory is leaking. They re disappointed when they get a list of the mallocs that somewhere down the line aren't released properly.
