The Folder Redirection settings allow you to have users personal folders stored in a different location than their personal computers This is often done to allow users to have access to their data no matter what computer they log on to, or to store users data on a central server so that it can be easily backed up Many users automatically store their data in their Documents folder on their Windows Vista computer This folder is accessible from the Start menu, and many applications automatically direct the user to the Documents folder when a file is saved The actual location of this folder is on the C: drive For example, if Joe is logged on with an account of Joe, the Documents path is C:\Users\Joe\Documents Similarly, Sally could be logged on with an account of Sally and her Documents path would be C:\Users\Sally\Documents Other data folders for specific users are Music, Pictures, Favorites, and more Data stored here is accessible only to the user, though administrators can bypass the restrictions and access the data if necessary To modify the location of data in the user s profile, you can access the group policy settings at User Configuration\Windows Settings\Folder Redirection These settings are shown in Figure 10-12 Note that you can see these settings only by using the GPMC Group Policy editor These settings aren t available when using the local Group Policy editor You can right-click any of the folders in the Group Policy editor and select properties You can then choose where you want the folder redirected It s common to create a share on a server and then configure Folder Redirection to access the share For example, you could have a server named MCITP1 You could then create a shared folder named Users This would now be accessible with the UNC path of \\MCITP1 \Users.

Figure 10-13 shows the properties for the Documents folder You can have this folder redirected for all users in the scope of the GPO to the \\MCITP1\Users share Another great feature of redirected folders is that when the user logs on, a folder within the Users share will automatically be created with the correct permissions
